Information about the Chinese Yuan

The Chinese yuan (CNY), also known as the renminbi (RMB), is the official currency of the People's Republic of China. Strictly speaking, renminbi is the name of the currency, while the yuan is its basic unit, although the two terms are often used interchangeably. The Chinese yuan is one of the world's most important currencies and plays a key role in international trade.

Nicknames and Common Expressions

In everyday China, the yuan is commonly referred to as kuài, while máo is used for the jiao, the currency's subdivision. To distinguish it from the Japanese yen, which shares the same symbol (¥), it is often written as CN¥ or RMB.

Coins and Banknotes

Symbol: ¥, CN¥, CNY or RMB.
Subunit: One yuan is divided into 10 jiao, each of which is divided into 10 fen.
Coins: ¥1, plus 1 and 5 jiao. Fen coins are now rarely used in everyday transactions.
Banknotes: ¥1, ¥5, ¥10, ¥20, ¥50 and ¥100.
Issuing authority: People's Bank of China.
