Information about the South African Rand
The South African rand (ZAR) has been the official currency of South Africa since 1961, when it replaced the South African pound following the establishment of the republic. The name rand comes from the Witwatersrand, the mountain ridge where the world's largest gold deposits were discovered. The rand is also used within the Common Monetary Area, alongside the currencies of Lesotho, Namibia and Eswatini.
Coins and Banknotes
Symbol: R, ZAR.
Subunit: One rand is divided into 100 cents.
Coins: 10, 20 and 50 cents, plus R1, R2 and R5.
Banknotes: R10, R20, R50, R100 and R200. Since 2012, all South African banknotes feature Nelson Mandela on the front.
