Information about the Euro

The euro (EUR) is the official currency of the euro area and the second most traded currency in the world after the US dollar. It was introduced for electronic payments in 1999, while euro coins and banknotes entered circulation on 1 January 2002. Today it is used by 21 member states of the European Union, representing more than 350 million people. It is also officially used or accepted in several European microstates.

Coins and Banknotes

Symbol: €, EUR.
Subunit: One euro is divided into 100 cents.
Coins: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents, plus €1 and €2. All euro coins have a common European side and a national side that differs from country to country, but they are legal tender throughout the euro area.
Banknotes: €5, €10, €20, €50, €100 and €200. Euro banknotes have the same design and are valid in every country that uses the euro. The €500 banknote is no longer issued, although existing notes remain legal tender.
Issuing authority: European Central Bank (ECB) and the national central banks of the Eurosystem.
