Information about the US Dollar
The US dollar is the official currency of the United States and several other countries, including Ecuador, El Salvador, Panama, East Timor, and the Compact of Free Association states (the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau). It is also widely accepted alongside local currencies in many countries around the world.
Nicknames and Common Expressions
Buck is the most common informal term for a US dollar and is widely used in everyday speech. Greenback is another well-known nickname, originally referring to the green colour of US banknotes and still widely used in financial markets.
Several banknotes also have their own nicknames. The $5 bill is sometimes called a Fin, the $50 bill a Grant, while the $100 bill is widely known as a Benjamin, Benji, or simply a Franklin.
The term grand (or simply G) is common slang for 1,000 US dollars.
